There is nothing better in the Summer than kickin’ back at the pool catching some rays. I’m not much of a swimmer—more of a lounger. I prefer to float above the surface checking out the action. Also, I’m pretty sure if I jumped in I would capsize. Oh there I go again, not looking on the bright side. My friends always say that I look at the glass half empty when I should be looking at it half full. I’m think half full of Miss Ollie’s Sweet Tea sounds pretty tasty on a hot day. Cheers to Summer, big adventures and looking on the bright side!

Big Yellow Cup Road Trip: Poolside

Back in the 1970s,
Roland Dickey attended all catering jobs for Dickey’s Barbecue. He knew that catering would be Dickey’s secret weapon in becoming the biggest and best barbecue franchise in the country.

 In 1976, Dickey’s was asked to cater a Texas Barbecue for a presidential candidate. As it turned out, that candidate was former governor of California, Ronald Reagan. The barbecue brought together
 Texas’ most successful oilmen and businessmen for a meet and greet for Reagan.


 Roland Dickey recalls it being an unforgettable experience. “Every person in the room wanted to meet Reagan,” said Dickey. “He seemed to captivate a room that typically would’ve been hard to
 control.”


 Reagan even insisted on greeting all of Dickey’s employees and being introduced to each and every one of them. Politicians usually don’t agree on much, but barbecue seems to be one thing that all
 can enjoy.

Dickey's Throwback Thursday: A Presidential Barbecue

While it’s true that you never know what kids will say, we think dads actually corner the market on crazy quips.
Dickey’s is asking Twitter fans to tweet @Dickeys the funny things their Dads say and hash tag it with #StuffDadSays.
Dickey’s will choose the best quote and that customer will win a Father’s Day gift bundle that will include Mr. Dickey’s Barbecue Cookbook, a "Rock the Block" apron, Dickey’s t-shirt, Dickey’s signature rib rub and Dickey’s original barbecue sauce.
The winning quote will also be featured on Dickey’s Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Inside the Pit blog and Instagram.
Contest Dates: June 3-June 15 with the winner being announced on June 17th.

Dickey’s Launches Father’s Day Contest #StuffDadSays

Los Angeles, California is not exactly the first place that comes to mind when you think about barbecue. But,
Dickey’s Barbecue plans to change all that. The fastest growing barbecue concept in the country is expanding in the LA area and decided it was time to introduce the area to our very own Mr. Dickey.

 Mr. Dickey donned his signature red apron and fedora while hanging out on the Today in LA set with Todd Schwartz, franchise owner of the Dickey’s in Northridge.


 With his trademark humor, Mr. Dickey dished with the host on how to make the best rib rub, turning a grill in to a smoker and his colorful take on barbecue and entertaining.

Dickey’s Announces Winner of Mom & Me Photo Contest

Delicious things come in small packages—I’m talking about hoagies! There are very few foods in this world that are as tummy pleasing as the hoagie. So on May 5th put your margarita down and enjoy a Lil’ Hoagie from Dickey’s to celebrate National Hoagie Day!
The official origin of the term “hoagie” is debatable. Some said it came from Pennsylvania while others argue it comes from the Italian word for bread-roll, “hokie.” There’s also a lot of confusion when it comes to whether or not the hoagie is like a hero or a sub.

In 1941, Travis Dickey opened the first Dickey's Barbecue Pit just north of downtown Dallas, Texas. Space on the restaurant's sign was rented out to Dr. Pepper to help pay the start-up costs for
the restaurant. The menu was limited to beef brisket, pit hams, barbecue beans, potato chips, beer, bottled milk and sodas.

Dickey's Throwback Thursday: The Original Dickey's

At an open house Wednesday, April 10, Dickey's Barbecue executives stood proud at their new Love Field Airport location while people flocked for free samples, Big Yellow Cups full of Miss Ollie's Tea, t-shirts and branded koozies. Dickey's Barbecue was born and bred in Dallas in 1941. It's fitting the Texas-based barbecue concept kicks-off its 300th location in its hometown airport. On Tuesday, April 16, Dickey's Barbecue will open its newest location as part of the first phase of the historic Love Field Modernization Project. Below are a few pictures from Wednesday's event:

Dickey’s is your Easter Ham Eggs-pert

Are you looking for a rib ticklin' pork ribs recipe? Well Mr. Dickey has got you covered! In his new cookbook, "Mr. Dickey's Barbecue Cookbook" he gives a
savory recipe for Pork Ribs with Sweet Barbecue Sauce.

 1 rack of pork ribs


 3 ounces of Dickey’s Rib Ticklin’ Rib Run


 Sweet Barbecue Sauce


 -Rub down the pork ribs with Rib Rub.


 -Using a smoker, smoke the ribs for 3 to 3.5 hours, maintaining a temperature between 270 and 295 degrees F.


 -Remove ribs from smoker and coat with Sweet Barbecue Sauce.


 -The best way to check the doneness of the ribs is to pick up the ribs with tongs on one end and if they bend nicely in the middle with the meat on top of the bones breaking a bit then they are

March Mania at Dickey's Barbecue

 <li>How long have you been with Dickey’s and what made you want to sell barbecue franchises?</li>
 <li>I started at Dickeys in September of 2005. Initially, I worked in construction and design. I quickly realized the huge value that we offer at Dickey’s and wanted to share that opportunity with as many people as possible!</li>
 <li>What qualities do you look for in potential Dickey’s franchise owners?</li>
 <li>I’m impressed by the prospect that wants to be a “hands-on operator” and is a real “people person”. We are passionate about the art of great barbecue but, this is a people business on both sides of the counter. You must be relatable to your employees, a good leader and have a desire to build a relationship with your customers.</li>
 <li>In your opinion, what one thing sets Dickey’s apart from other franchises?</li>
 <li>One of our best features is the lack of any, straight up, competition in the “quick-serve” barbecue segment. Also, most of the great territories are still open and available to new franchisees. Many of the people I have sold franchises have no previous restaurant experience and that is their concern. However, these owners often become our best operators because they just follow our system and our system works.</li>
 <li>What markets would you like to see Dickey’s expand into?</li>
 <li>I’m shooting for Global Domination. Hot areas right now are on the West coast, North Carolina and almost anywhere in the Midwest.</li>
 <li>How many franchises have you sold in your career here at Dickey’s?</li>
 <li>I have sold 114 units for Dickey’s.</li>
 <li>What motivates you about selling Dickey’s franchises?</li>
 <li>I’m motivated by the knowledge that if our new owners work hard in their business and follow our system, they will prosper and in about a year they will give me a call about starting their next location.</li>
 <li>If roles were reversed, would you buy a Dickey’s franchise? Why?</li>
 <li>Yes for all the reasons I have given. It’s a great brand and a supportive system.</li>
 <li>What do you love most about your job?</li>
 <li>I love the fact that I am able to use my experience as a franchisee, to help people get out of dead-end careers and to help them prosper in their own businesses.</li>
 <li>What is your favorite thing on the menu?</li>
 <li>It’s a huge “toss up” between the great pork ribs or the beef brisket!</li>
