The East Texas Arboretum will host the annual Fall Festival from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.&nbsp; Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1601 Patterson Rd. The fee is $5 per car. Tickets for food and children's games will be sold as well.
The event will have singers, both adults, and children singing for entertainment.
Children will be able to enjoy Boocoos the clown who performs magic tricks, pumpkin decorating, face painting, games and stories in the school house.
Henderson County animal shelter will have pets up for adoption and available to interact with. You can save the life of an animal and adopt your new best friend.
“This is one of the most fun family activities in Athens” said Deborah Deas, board member and fall festival chairman.
Mick Merco will be singing and playing guitar.
There will be vendors booths, live music and food for adults.
All proceeds go to the general operating fund for the Arboretum.
The event is sponsored by City of Athens, First State Bank, and the Athens Chamber.
The arboretum will also host a holiday canning class from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 17. The fee is $25 for non members and will teach how to make a festive jam.

Edom Art Festival
The 2019 Art Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday behind the artists studio on the festival grounds.&nbsp; Admission is free.
The event started 47 years ago by artist Doug Brown. Artists of high quality and unique creations are invited to attend the event which is hosted by the Edom Chamber of Commerce and produced by the participating artists.
The event website states,
“Here you will find jewelry, pottery, photography, sculpture, baskets, woodworking, glass, and original garden art. Shop for one-of-a-kind pieces of clothing, paintings, handmade journals and mixed media creations made from recycled materials. Watch a blacksmith demonstrate his skill at the forge, and perhaps a potter at the wheel, or a raku pottery firing demonstration.”
They also will have a wine garden music and food.
“In addition, in the Wine Garden under the trees, we will be sharing the music of some great acoustical singer/songwriter musicians along with the offerings of a few of our local wineries in a setting to sit and relax, and delish handmade chocolates to pair with your wine. Great food is available from local vendors with culinary treats such as Cajun gumbo, homemade sorbet and gourmet small batch ice cream, to frothy root beer and corn dogs, barbecue and pork sandwiches, and wonderful food trucks for all your dining pleasures.”
Children will have a kids area to express themselves through art with a piece to take home or donate.
Dogs are welcome if you pick up after them according to the site.

Dickey's Vehicle show benefitting Feed the Hungry campaign
Dickey's fifth annual Car, Truck, Motorcycle, boat and off-road vehicle show from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 12 at 101 S. Third Street, Mabank. All donations from this event will go directly to the Feed the Hungry program.
People in need of a meal from the Mabank area, can come eat for free, on a certain day, to be announced.
“No questions asked,” Owner Guy New said “If you need food, clothing, or counseling assistance we will have someone for you to speak with, optionally. Just come in and tell my staff you are in need!”
The fund-raiser will have live music will be provided from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. by Tyler Stokes Band, and David Bird Jones, street outlaw bracket racer, will also be there. The event boasts family fun as well as the sweet aroma of their barbecue. Businesses will also have booths.&nbsp;

Menu
The star items of the menu here are the fresh meats smoked daily in a wood pit, including pork, beef brisket, chicken breast, pork ribs, kielbasa sausage and turkey. Also available: sandwiches, tacos, sides, desserts, free soft-serve ice cream cones.
Atmosphere
The ambiance is warm and cozy, with distressed wood on the floors, walls and table tops, faux chalkboards depicting cuts of meats, and subway tiles giving it a chic warehouse feel. There’s an open-air kitchen that lets you oversee preparation of your self-serve meal, and you can see the giant pit smoker and coolers full of raw meat as you advance along the pickup line.
Our favorite food/price
The oversized menu hangs along the serving line, and after salivating at 10 different meals, I settled on the two-meat plate ($12.95), choosing pork ribs and chicken breast as entrees, and corn on the cob and mac and cheese as sides. The meats were fork-tender and had a delicious smoky flavor from the wood chips. Every meal comes with a soft roll, and you can pump your own barbecue sauces into plastic cups at the self-serve drink station. My husband and son had the daily special: a pulled pork sandwich topped with polish kielbasa sausage, two sides, roll and drink for only $9.95, a real steal and tasty to boot. While we were eating we noticed a soft-serve ice cream machine near the drink station, and a fellow diner said it was complimentary. We enjoyed vanilla and chocolate cones and left full and satisfied.
Reason to go
Dickey’s is now one of my go-to barbecue joints, simply because of the great taste, variety of choices and outstanding value. Meats are slow-cooked daily, and the portions are extremely generous. Free ice cream is a bonus.
Service
Everything is self-serve, meaning you can get more soda and barbecue sauce when you want. Service along the ordering line was quick and efficient, and the staff was very friendly.
Noise level
Fairly quiet on a recent weeknight.
Kid friendly
Children have their own budget-priced meals of barbecue meat, sliders and chicken nuggets, and there are several family packs to feed a crowd.

The Dickey’s BBQ Franchise was evaluated on its brand name recognition, profitability, cost to open a new location, franchise support infrastructure, and its overall return-on-investment (“ROI”).
The FranchiseBiz.Review site has become known for its criticism of some of the world’s best-known chainstore companies, as well as for its acerbic wit and dedication to practicality.

Indeed, in Dickey’s BBQ Franchise’s case, the relatively low cost for getting into the restaurant’s family, combined with fairly reasonable growth and the trendline of expanding numbers of franchise locations (which indicated to the editors that the franchise support staff is performing very well) — all of this combined to make for an A-grade rating.
Dickey’s BBQ Franchise group declined to comment, but the company was clearly pleased by the rating, and posted a mention of it on their franchise website.

The time of year where the holidays end up upon us is around the corner. Before long we will be leaving the 100 degree temperatures behind for pumpkin spice and peppermint mocha. The stores will have holiday merchandise out. The dollar store already has Halloween costumes.
With all of the shopping, commercialism and greed that can surface around these months, it is important to remember those who are less fortunate and going through hard times.
Guy New is doing just that. He will be opening up his restaurant, Dickey's Barbecue Pit, in Mabank and Rowlett, on a certain day to people in need.
People in need of a meal from the Mabank area, can come eat for free, on a certain day, to be announced.
“No questions asked,” Owner Guy New said “If you need food, clothing, or counseling assistance we will have someone for you to speak with, optionally. Just come in and tell my staff you are in need!”
In order for this event to happen they need sponsors and have fundraisers.
New is currently looking for churches to offer counseling, food banks, clothes closets, shelters and other assistance programs.
“We cook, you take the credit,” New added.
One of these events will be Dickey's fifth annual Car, Truck, Motorcycle, boat and off-road vehicle show from 10-6 on October 12. All donations from this event will go directly to the Feed the Hungry program.

Thanks to Rene’ and Gwen Bassett, there’s a new player on Napa’s barbecue scene: Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in the River Park shopping center. Dickey’s, a large barbecue chain, is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and began operations in 1941.
“My wife and I were on a trip to Visalia not long ago and stopped in the Dickey’s there for dinner,” Bassett said recently. ”After enjoying their barbecue, we both agreed this is just what Napa needs.
“When we returned from our trip, I get a phone call from Dickey’s corporate asking if I had requested information. Gwen, who didn’t tell me she was going to do so, had contact Dickey’s and the next thing I know we’re signing contracts,” Bassett chuckled.
There are various types of ribs that are popular in different parts of the country. “Dickey’s serves St. Louis-style pork ribs,” Bassett said, “which has more to do with the rubs and seasonings that are used in its preparation.”
Bassett said ribs are his top seller so far, followed closely by beef brisket. Dickey’s also serves smoked chicken, smoked turkey, pulled pork, polish kielbasa sausage and spicy jalapeno cheddar kielbasa.
All the meats are pit-smoked daily on site. Guests have three types of sauce to choose from: original, sweet and spicy.
Side dishes include barbecue beans, cabbage slaw, potato salad, baked potato casserole, Caesar salad, mac &amp; cheese, creamed spinach, jalapeno beans and green beans.
Other favorites found at Dickey’s includes the famous Texas Frito Pie Stack, the brisket mac stack, chicken and cheese tacos as well as brisket and cheese tacos. There’s also a kids’ plate option.
“We’re getting a lot of walk-in business,” said Bassett. “But there are still a lot of people who don’t know we’re here. We’ve been walking the neighborhoods handing out ‘Be My Guest’ cards to get people to come and try us.”
Bassett was excited to mention that Dickey’s will now also be sold at Napa Silverados games.
Catering is a big thing in Napa and Dickey’s has already stuck its toe in the water with a big 500-person event at the the Veterans Home of California in Yountville. Both Bassett and his wife are veterans. So is his oldest daughter, Danielle Bassett, who also works at the restaurant.
“For our larger events we set it up buffet style and have someone there slicing the meat for you,” Bassett said.
Dickey’s serves wine and beer on tap. And what’s a Southern-style restaurant without pecan pie, chocolate chip cookies and blondie brownies?
Dickey’s prides itself on its homey, relaxed atmosphere that Bassett said his guests appreciate. The restaurant is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at 1335 W. Imola Ave.

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit has a storied tradition dating back nearly eight decades, according to Brad Phillips, owner of the Dickey’s franchise located in the Bloomington area of St. George.
“Dickey’s Barbecue has been around since 1941, based out of Dallas, Texas,” Phillips explained. “They are the largest barbecue chain in the world. We go through the most briskets of any other company in the entire world.”

Phillips called the beef briskets, which are the chain’s most renowned specialty, “just amazing,” adding that the secret lies in how the meat is cooked.&nbsp;
